III. Causes: Infectious Esophagitis

  1. Fungal
    1. Esophageal Candidiasis (most common)
      1. Higher risk with HIV Infection, systemic antibiotics or Corticosteroids
    2. Aspergillus
  2. Viral
    1. Herpes Simplex Virus (second most common)
    2. Cytomegalovirus (CMV)
    3. HIV Infection
    4. Varicella Zoster Virus (VZV)
  3. Bacterial
    1. Gram Negative Rods
    2. Gram Positive Cocci

IV. Causes: Noninfectious

  1. Gastroesophageal Reflux
    1. Most common noninfectious cause
    2. More common with Hiatal Hernia, decreased LES pressure, pregnancy
  2. Pill Esophagitis
  3. Eosinophilic Esophagitis
