II. Pathophysiology
- Coronaviridae are a family of enveloped RNA Viruses with a helical capsid
- Coronaviridae are Message Sense RNA Viruses (Positive Stranded, +ssRNA)
- Message sense RNA (+ssRNA) are identical to Messenger RNA (mRNA)
- Like mRNA, +ssRNA may be immediately translated by host ribosomes into Protein
III. Types: Genera in the Coronaviridae Family
- Coronavirus
- Mild Upper Respiratory Infections (Common Cold)
- Nearly identical presentation to Rhinovirus
- Coronavirus causes 15% of adult Common Colds
- Major Coronavirus outbreaks with severe morbidity and mortality
- Mild Upper Respiratory Infections (Common Cold)
- Human Torovirus
- Viral Gastroenteritis with acute and persistent Diarrhea (esp. children)
- First identified in 1984 as a cause of nosocomial Diarrhea
