II. Indications

  1. Xerosis or Ichthyosis Vulgaris
    1. Exfoliation of Dry Skin (Xerosis) or rough/scaly skin

III. Contraindications

  1. Use externally only
  2. Do not apply to mucous membranes, lips or eyes

IV. Medications

  1. AmLactin (5, 7, 12 or 15%) cream or lotion
  2. Lac-Hydrin (12%, 120 mg/ml) cream or lotion

V. Mechanism

  1. Alpha Hydroxy Acid Exfoliant
  2. Lactic Acid is neutralized when combined with ammonium hydroxide to produce Ammonium Lactate

VI. Dosing

  1. Dry Skin
    1. Use once to twice per day for 3 weeks
    2. Taper frequency to 1-3 days per week
  2. Aging
    1. Apply 1-2 days each week

VII. Adverse Effects

  1. Skin stinging, burning or redness (common)
    1. Symptoms are typically limited to first few minutes after application
    2. Tolerated better after first few applications
  2. Photosensitivity
    1. Use Sunscreen
