II. Epidemiology

  1. Drinking Water supply in U.S
    1. Regulated, municipal public water: 85%
      1. Subject to contamination and infrastructure failures, flooding and water main breaks
      2. Associated with outbreaks (e.g. Flint Michigan Lead Poisoning and Legionnaires disease)
    2. Unregulated well water: 15% (43 Million people)
      1. At risk from local contamination (e.g. nitrates, PFAS Chemicals, Microbes)
      2. Any contaminant testing is left to the managers of the well
  2. High Risk Exposures
    1. Pregnancy (Teratogens)
    2. Infants and Young children
    3. Immunocompromised

III. Causes: Exposures

  1. Agriculture runoff (e.g. nitrates, Microbes)
  2. Industrial waste (e.g. PFAS Chemicals, other carcinogens)
  3. Common specific contaminants
    1. Lead Poisoning
    2. Arsenic Poisoning
    3. PFAS Chemical

IV. Prevention

  1. See Water Disinfection
  2. See Prevention of Waterborne Illness
  3. Test Private Wells (CDC guidance)
    1. https://www.cdc.gov/drinking-water/safety/guidelines-for-testing-well-water.html
  4. Home water filters
    1. Must be matched to specific contaminants (one filter type does not protect against all exposures)
