II. Epidemiology

Incidence increases inversely with Gestational Age <37 weeks
- Present in nearly all infants <28 weeks gestation (or birth weight <1000 g)
III. Definitions
- Apnea of Prematurity
- Respiratory pause in a Premature Infant born before 37 weeks
- Episode >= 20 seconds OR
- Episode >= 10 seconds AND accompanied by Bradycardia, Hypoxia, change in tone or atypical movements
IV. Management: Typically directed by Neonatology

Methylxanthines
- Continue until event-free and at least 37 to 40 weeks adjusted age
- Apnea monitor
- Continue until event-free and at least 43 weeks adjusted age
V. Course
- Episodes cease in most Premature Infants by 42-44 weeks adjusted age
