II. Definitions

  1. Redox Reaction (Oxidation-Reduction, Oxidoreductase)
    1. Oxidation-Reduction Reaction in which a Reducing Agents transfers electrons to an Oxidizing Agent
  2. Reducing Agent (Reductant)
    1. Substances that donate an electron, hydrogen or other element or compound that decreases its positive valence
    2. Occurs in a Redox Reaction (e.g. biosynthesis) with a net loss of electrons from the Reducing Agent
    3. Examples of mitochondrial agents with reducing power: NADH, NADPH, FADH2
  3. Oxidizing Agent (Oxidant)
    1. Substance that accepts an electron, hydrogen or other element or compound from a Reducing Agent
