II. Definitions

  1. Cephamycin
    1. Naturally occurring beta lactam Cephalosporins with a 7-methoxy group
    2. Activity against Gram Positive and Gram Negative Bacteria, and resistance to beta lactamases

III. Mechanism

  1. Antibiotics in this group are Cephamycin derivatives
  2. Antibiotic coverage spectrum
    1. Gram Positive activity (but less than Second Generation Broad-spectrum Cephalosporins such as Cefuroxime)
    2. Gram Negative coverage
    3. Anaerobic coverage (e.g. Bacteroides)

IV. Indications

  1. Abdominal Surgery prophylaxis
  2. Colorectal surgery prophylaxis

V. Medications

  1. Cefoxitin (Mefoxin)
    1. Give 1-2 grams IM or IV every 6-8 hours
  2. Cefotetan (Cefotan)
    1. Give 1-2 grams IM or IV every 12 hours
  3. Cefamandole
