II. Indications

  1. On-Demand, Non-Hormonal Contraception

III. Mechanism

  1. Vaginal pH Regulators/modulators create a vaginal acidic environment that reduces Sperm Motility
  2. Thick, viscous gel may also retard Sperm Motility

IV. Medications

  1. Phexxi
    1. Vaginal, tan gel containing Lactic Acid, citric acid, and Potassium bitartrate
    2. Each single-dose vaginal applicator (5 g) with plunger is individually wrapped in a foil pouch
    3. Supplied in box of 12 units
    4. Store at room Temperature (20-25 C, 68 to 77 F)

V. Dosing

  1. Phexxi
    1. Apply vaginally immediately before intercourse (or up to an hour before)
    2. Repeat application for each episode of intercourse

VI. Adverse Effects

  1. Infections
    1. Urinary Tract Infection (Cystitis, Pyelonephritis)
    2. Vaginal Yeast Infection
    3. Bacterial Vaginosis
  2. Local irritation
    1. Vulvovaginal burning Sensation
    2. Vulvovaginal Pruritus
    3. Vaginal Discharge
    4. Dysuria

VII. Efficacy

  1. Efficacy in preventing pregnancy: 86.5% with typical use (93% effective with perfect use)
