- Asymptomatic Under 60 years old
- Bulging disc: 33%
- Herniated disc: 20%
- Unexpected XRay finding: 0.0004% (1 in 2500)
- Asymptomatic Over 60 years old
- Degenerative changes: 100%
- Bulging disk: 80%
- Herniated disk: 33%
- Spinal stenosis: 20%

- Very sensitive to patient movement
- Advantages
- No radiation
- Large area of spine covered
- Shows soft tissue well (e.g. nerve)
- Shows changes within disc and vertebral body
- Adjuncts: Gadolinium Contrast
- Not recommended if prior lumbar spine surgery
- Contrast in this case reduces accuracy
- May offer additional information in select cases
- Enhances nerve roots in inflammation and infection
- Distinguishes recurrent disc herniation from scar
