Posterior Night Splint
- Indications
- Plantar Fasciitis refractory to basic measures
- Mechanism
- Keeps foot in maximal dorsiflexion
- May be uncomfortable if >90 degrees
- May interfere with sleep
- Preparation
- Layer 4" dry Fiberglass casting material into 12 plies
- Length to extend between high calf and proximal toes
- Put casting material inside tube gauze
- Apply material to foot and leg
- Maximize dorsiflexion
- Patient may hold tube gauze to dorsiflex foot
- Apply soaked ace wrap around splint
- Remove ace wrap when splint hardened
- Efficacy of posterior night splints
- Relieved symptoms of 16 out of 16 patients (n=32)
- Placebo: 6 of 17 control patients improved
- Average time to healing: 12.5 weeks
