Pacifiers (C0030172)

Definition (UMD) Pacifiers designed to promote an infant's oral sucking action. These pacifiers typically consist of a nipple (latex or silicone) mounted on a plastic shield that is designed to prevent the infant from swallowing the device; the shields usually have some holes to circulate air and saliva to help protect the infant's skin from chafing. Oral infant pacifiers are used to calm infants; they are available in different sizes and shapes appropriate to fit the infant's mouth.
Definition (MSH) Devices that babies can suck on when they are not feeding. The extra sucking can be comforting to the babies and pacify them. Pacifiers usually are used as a substitute for the thumb in babies who suck on their thumb or fingers almost constantly.
