Bismuth Subsalicylate

Aka: Bismuth Subsalicylate, Pepto-Bismol
  1. Indications
    1. Traveler's Diarrhea
    2. Helicobacter Pylori management
  2. Dosing
    1. Tablet: Two tabs PO qid up to maximum of every 4 hours
    2. Liquid: 30 ml every 30 minutes to maximum of 240 ml/day
  3. Adverse Effects
    1. Turns Tongue and stool black
    2. Mild Tinnitus
    3. May decrease bioavailability of Doxycycline
      1. Doxycycline is used for Malaria Prophylaxis
  4. Contraindications
    1. Avoid in Salicylate allergy
    2. Avoid if patient on Salicylates OR Coumadin
    3. Do not exceed 3 weeks of use

Definition (NCI) A bismuth salt of salicylic acid. Little absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, bismuth subsalicylate exerts a local effect on the gastric mucosa, coating it and protecting it from the corrosive effects of acid and pepsin.
