Nasal sinus (C0030471)

Definition (MSH) Air-filled spaces located within the bones around the NASAL CAVITY. They are extensions of the nasal cavity and lined by the ciliated NASAL MUCOSA. Each sinus is named for the cranial bone in which it is located, such as the ETHMOID SINUS; the FRONTAL SINUS; the MAXILLARY SINUS; and the SPHENOID SINUS.
Definition (NCI_NCI-GLOSS) One of many small hollow spaces in the bones around the nose. Paranasal sinuses are named after the bones that contain them: frontal (the lower forehead), maxillary (cheekbones), ethmoid (beside the upper nose), and sphenoid (behind the nose). The paranasal sinuses open into the nasal cavity (space inside the nose) and are lined with cells that make mucus to keep the nose from drying out during breathing.
Definition (NCI) An air-filled cavity adjacent to the nasal cavity lined by a mucous membrane and located in the bones of the skull. There are four paranasal sinuses on each side of the face: ethmoid, frontal, maxillary, and sphenoid sinus.
Definition (NCI_CDISC) An air-filled cavity adjacent to the nasal cavity lined by a mucous membrane and located in the bones of the skull. There are four paranasal sinuses on each side of the face: ethmoid, frontal, maxillary, and sphenoid sinus. (NCI)
Definition (CSP) air-filled extensions of the respiratory part of the nasal cavity into the frontal, ethmoid, sphenoid, and maxillary cranial bones, lined by the ciliated mucous membranes of the nasal cavity.
