II. Indications

  1. Evaluation of uterine abnormality
  2. Second-line study in Endometrial Cancer Screening (or Endometrial Hyperplasia)
    1. Focal endometrial lesions on Ultrasound
    2. Non-diagnostic Ultrasound or Endometrial Biopsy
    3. Persistent Abnormal Uterine Bleeding

III. Contraindications

  1. Endometrial Biopsy or other findings suggests Endometrial Cancer (risk of peritoneal seeding)

IV. Technique

  1. Ultrasound performed after sterile saline infused into Uterus
  2. Allows for better visualization of uterine cavity
  3. Ultrasound-guided biopsy of focal lesions can also be done

Definition (NCI) A procedure, also known as sonohysterography or saline infusion sonography, using a minimally invasive ultrasound technique to view the inside of the uterus. Sterile saline is injected into the endometrial cavity thereby distending the endometrial cavity, providing good visualization of the anatomic structures within.
