Lung Transplantation in Cystic Fibrosis

Indications for transplant referral in Cystic Fibrosis
1. FEV1 30% or less
2. Mitigating factors
  1. Severe malnutrition
  2. Cor Pulmonale
  3. Marked Exercise intolerance
  4. Frequent respiratory exacerbations
  5. Increasingly resistant pseudomonas
  6. Young age
Contraindications to transplantation
1. Severe Scoliosis
2. Renal insufficiency
3. Biliary Cirrhosis
4. Poorly controlled Diabetes Mellitus
5. History of noncompliance
Prognosis
1. Survival with transplant
  1. One year survival: 65%
  2. Two year survival: 58%
2. Survival without transplant (FEV1 < 30%)
  1. Two Year survival: 50%
