Method
1. Latex agglutination test
2. Identifies serum Antibody to streptolysin O
  1. Group A Streptococcus Oxygen labile hemolysin
Mechanism
1. Sensitive for acute streptococcal infection
  1. Early Penicillin prevents ASO rise
2. Increases within one week of infection
3. Peaks 2-4 weeks after infection
Normal
1. Age 5-12 years: <333 I.U.
2. Young Adults: <200 I.U.
Increased
1. Streptococcus respiratory infection
2. Acute Rheumatic Fever (80%)
3. Acute Glomerulonephritis (95%)
  1. Membranoproliferative Glomerulonephritis (20%)
  2. Acute Poststreptococcal Glomerulonephritis (70%)
