- Symptoms
- Child under age 18 years
- Recurrent painful crises
- Sudden onset pain in abdomen, chest, back and joints
- Labs
- Profound Anemia
- Reticulocyte Count <1%
- Management
- Pain control for acute crisis
- Requires aggressive Narcotic Analgesia
- Consider Patient Controlled Analgesia (PCA Pump)
- Morphine is preferred over Meperidine (Seizure risk)
- Intravenous fluids
- Avoid Fluid Overload
- Limit total fluid to <1.5x maintenance requirements
- Oxygen if Hypoxia present
- Incentive Spirometry
- Course
- Acute Crisis usually resolves spontaneously 7-10 days
