| Definition (MSH) | (6 alpha)-17-Hydroxy-6-methylpregn-4-ene-3,20-dione. A synthetic progestational hormone used in veterinary practice as an estrus regulator. |
| Definition (CSP) | synthetic progestin derived from 17-hydroxyprogesterone; a long-acting contraceptive that is effective both orally or by intramuscular injection and has also been used to treat breast and endometrial neoplasms. |
| Definition (NCI) | A hormonal anticancer drug that is also used in cancer prevention. It belongs to the family of drugs called progestins. |
| Definition (PDQ) | A synthetic derivative of progesterone administered as an acetate salt (medroxyprogesterone acetate) with antiestrogenic activity. As a do all progestins, medroxyprogesterone binds to and activates nuclear receptors which subsequently bind to and activate target genes for transcription. As an antiestrogen, this agent may inhibit the growth-stimulating effects of estrogen on estrogen-sensitive tumor cells.
