II. Stages

  1. Stage 0: Noninvasive Breast Cancer
    1. Ductal Carcinoma In Situ or DCIS (Tis, N0, M0)
      1. Microcalcifications limited to Breast ducts
      2. Progresses to invasive Breast Cancer in 40% if not treated
  2. Stage 1: Tumor <=2 cm or small positive Lymph Nodes (Early Invasive Breast Cancer)
    1. Stage 1A
      1. Small, but invasive with no spread to Lymph Nodes (T1, NO, M0)
    2. Stage 1B
      1. Lymph Node spread (<2 mm) and tumor <2 cm (T0-1, N1, M0)
  3. Stage 2: Tumor >2 cm or positive Lymph Nodes (Early Invasive Breast Cancer)
    1. Stage 2A
      1. No tumor, spread to 1-3 axillary Lymph Nodes, but no distant metastases (T0 N1 M0) OR
      2. Tumor <2 cm with spread to 1-3 axillary nodes (T1 N1 M0) OR
      3. Tumor 2-5 cm, without axillary Lymph Node involvement (T2 N0 M0)
    2. Stage 2B
      1. Tumor 2-5 cm, with spread to 1-3 axillary nodes (T2 N1 M0) OR
      2. Tumor >5 cm, without axillary Lymph Node involvement (T3 N0 M0)
  4. Stage 3: Tumor Involving Skin or Chest Wall (Locally Advanced Breast Cancer)
    1. Stage 3A
      1. Cancer has spread to 4-9 axillary Lymph Nodes or internal mammary nodes (T0-3, N2, M0)
    2. Stage 3B
      1. Cancer spread to chest wall, Breast ulceration or swelling or inflammatory (T4, N0-2, M0)
    3. Stage 3C
      1. Cancer has spread to >9 axillary Lymph Nodes or internal mammary, subclavicular nodes (T0-4, N3, M0)
  5. Stage 4: Metastatic Breast Cancer
    1. Cancer spread to other organs such as Lung, Liver, Bones, Brain (T0-4, N0-3, M1)
  6. Recurrent
    1. Recurrence described as local, regional or distant
