Acute Labyrinthitis

Aka: Acute Labyrinthitis, Viral Labyrinthitis
  1. Etiologies: Infection
    1. Viral Labyrinthitis
      1. Mumps most common etiology (Vertigo uncommon)
    2. Bacterial Labyrinthitis (uncommon)
      1. Due to extension of Otitis Media or Cholesteatoma
  2. Pathophysiology
    1. Not synonymous with Vestibular Neuronitis
    2. Local spread from middle ear infection or Meningitis
    3. Causes permanent damage to cochlea, vestibular system
  3. Symptoms
    1. Vertigo is variably present
    2. Severe and total Sensorineural Hearing Loss
    3. Tinnitus may be present
  4. Signs
    1. Nystagmus
    2. Ear exam normal
